Radio K at SXSW 2013 update: The Blind Shake, pt. 6

Posted on 3/17/2013

Another day of three shows. The first was Peelander Z's showcase outdoor at the Grackle. We played this venue three years ago and played in front of two dudes and a pile of gravel. Now the place was full of show goers. What a difference a Z makes.

The next show was outside at Barbarella with Minneapolis's the Sleeze, and Manatees from Memphis. This was put together by Rubberneck magazine, a great photo journalism zine created by fantastic people. A fun show.

The third show was a last minute addition to the Slovenly Records showcase. We were the only American band on the bill. We played with a one man band called King Automatic from France. Guitar, kick, snare, hi-hat, keyboard, and some other mystery instruments that came in. The guy was phenomenal. He would make the world's best administrative assistant because of his ability to multitask. Instead, he's the world's best one-man band.

The best discovery of this whole trip, though, was a band from Amsterdam called the Anamolys. Three super tall blonde dudes, two guitars, and a stripped down drum kit. They are wilder than mountain scenery. It was truly not rude when I shoved the drummer and guitar player to get back on stage to play one more. It was in the name of justice. No way should those guys ever stop playing. During their encore, they entered the crowd and took over the tables and somehow made it back to their starting point at the perfect time in the song. Amazing band. Great people. I understand, maybe you don't dig tall, handsome blonde dudes, but if I was able to get past it, so will you. The Anamolys!

Foxygen melts down like Fukushima at Red 7. After sound-checking for 45 min, singer complains about tour fatigue to which one patron says "shut up and play a song."  Total collapse ensued.

Doritos are inescapable.

Haim was a no-show at Empire Auto last night.

Night Beds were uncomfortably erotic.  Cool mix of fleet fox-harmonies and Ryan Adams swag.

Hunting club "cage condoms" spread protected love at day shows.

Rocking a Freeway entrance ramp and Hosting Someone Else's BBQ

Yesterday was one of those days that was great and not just because it was PI-day. We had a breakfast of free nachos and beer, courtesy of some "startup that is going to revolutionize the way we optimize synergy blahblahblah." We had a show at a Lounge with a stage overlooking an entrance ramp to the freeway. As the drummer, I spent most of the set watching the cars go by, reflecting on the migratory nature of Americans in motor vehicles. Where were they all going? What did their futures hold? What song are we even playing, oh my god I have been lost in reflection for the past hour?!

We are being hosted by some friends of our and thought we'd buy them some meat to grill. It is grill o'clock down in Austin. We bought a rack of ribs, some bacon (to wrap asparagus in), and a variety of brats. That should be enough, right? Wrong, dude. We show up to the house and this "small bbq" has reared its head as a full on social gathering/ party. There were more mouths to feed than we could conceive of. In a panic, we (4 people who neither live at this house nor know any of the guests) began relegating tasks to random Texans. "Dude in the hat, go get some coleslaw. Lady with the blue hair, we need more hot sauce!" In the end, a group of men with more proverbial hairs on their chests stepped up and did the kind of grilling that the boys of Carroll aren't wired to do. The guests were fed, a fire was lit, and a game called "Hot Potato Jr." was invented.

Anyway, we have two shows to play today and then we head back to Minnesota, an unforgiving 18 hour drive where every mile corresponds with a drop in degrees.

With bare feet in the grass,
Charlie Rudoy, drummer in Carroll

Three shows on this day. The first was at Trailer Space Records, the best record store in Austin for punk and garage type music. Awesome show. Played with Thee Open Sex from Indiana, Marriage from Austin, Spray Pain, and Useless Eaters.

After that we hopped a cemetery wall to get to our show at Sailor Jerry's. Dave forgot his jacket in the cemetery and had to go back right before we played. Luckily, people don't typically pick up and wear coats they find in cemeteries. That show was great, too.

We finally had a chance to catch some bands while waiting for our 1am showcase at the Volstead. Caught Thee Oh Sees, Destruction Unit, and Ex-Cult. All amazing bands! Even though it was late by the time we played, the room was packed with people who really held their liquor well and managed to keep from devolving into droopy-faced confession dispensers. Everyone was bright eyed and bushy tailed. It was our most fun and intense show yet.

Day 1 for Hunting Club was a blast at SXSW. Played a great show at East Ave Lounge, hung out with some great Minnesota peeps, met some new New York peeps and now we're playing today with them at the Sound Desert Blog Showcase @ Austin Ale House today. Also saw some cool bands like DIIV, Foxygen (they kind of had a meltdown), and saw Sway from MTV. What up world?

Greetings from sunny Austin, TX!

Thursday 3/15 was a fun filled day at SXSW.  We spent the afternoon attending cool day parties, met up with great friends and watched many rad new bands including Cheatahs, Savages, Toy and Palma Violets.  BNLX then headed over to the East Side lounge to play The Mother of All SXSW Showcases with our pals Wiping Out Thousands. We had a blast!  Thanks to Actual Wolf for the cool shot from the show.  After that, we found out about a crazy illegal gig on the pedestrian bridge at 3am by super awesome bands Parquet Courts and Merchandise.  There were hundreds of kids gathered for this ad-hock event.  Ahhhh, we **heart** SXSW!  TODAY, BNLX is super excited to play the MN Nice show @ The Liberty, sponsored by McNally Smith College, 89.3 the Current and Vita.mn.  We hit the stage at 4:30!   Whooop!

Cheers,
BNLX

War Poets first showcase tonight at 9pm.

We're here at SXSW! An amazing array  of musicians and fans in a backdrop of endless music venues. What a blast! Went to a conference - speaker is Stevie Nicks. Great talk about her career  - opening for Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix. "Edge of 17" came from her personal conversation with Tom Petty's wife. She wants to teach - maybe at UCLA. Talked about her sobriety and how tough it was.

Played a day show at Beerland with amazing bands for Gerard Cosloy's showcase. It's worth anyone's time to check out Golden Pelicans (Orlando), Obnox (Cleveland), Spray Paint (Austin), and the Unholy Two. We love those bands! We're so happy people were able to come and see us at 2pm. An excellent show.  It was also great to see Minneapolis' Tom Loftus, who runs Modern Radio Records. After he heard the news about our van, he threw cash at us and wouldn't have it any other way.

In news from back home, our drummer, Dave Roper, invented a drink called the Ajax for the Amsterdam Bar (where he works) and it made the City Pages drink of the week!  Regular Ajax could be useful here in Austin, though. It's starting to get sloppy and it's not even the weekend.

Radio K at SXSW 2013 update: The Blind Shake, pt. 3

Posted on 3/14/2013

Had a phenomenal show at the Volstead in East Austin with Los Vigilantes and Las Ardillas, two Puerto Rican rock/punk bands. Lots of folks were right up front all night getting sweaty. Such a blast. And just when we thought the night couldn't possibly get any cooler, it didn't. Some suckers broke into our rental van, stealing a Fender Bassman 100, a Music Man head, a baritone, and a brand new, homemade guitar cab that was only used once.

I get it, blame the victim, right? "Why did you leave stuff in the van? Why didn't you walk it the one mile to the venue even though the venue said not to bring any extra gear because there was nowhere to store it?" Um, you just answered your own question on that one, son. But I will hold you (meaning society) to the "blame the victim strategy" when I find the dude (lets be honest, it was a male) responsible. "Oh my gosh! Why was this poor thief cooked and eaten?" Well, any good hunter eats what they kill. And he was steamed. Get your facts straight. They real question is, why was he dumb enough to get caught? See, we're blaming the victim now. Good. Back on track. Oh, and why is there a gimp in my car? Too many questions. They key here is we all learned a valuable lesson here. And THAT'S one to grow on!

BNLX had a great day at SXSW today:  we ran into tons of new and old friends, we ate great bites from the local food trucks, Wiggy helped us put up flyers around town, we participated in social media, we saw other cool bands and we enjoyed the 75 degree weather.  BNLX plays the East Avenue Lounge Thursday at 10:45!

Cheers,

Yesterday was a huge party in what appeared to be an outdoor greenhouse in the middle of a residential neighborhood called Tillery Park. It was like a little forest where you can buy the plants and trees. The show was put on by Panache Booking to release this mixtape we were lucky enough to be a part of. Bands like Thee Oh Sees, Reigning Sound, Ty Segall, and Red Kross have tunes on it. But the cassette tape doesn't fit in the rental van's CD player, so who knows, maybe the whole thing is lame. Maybe it's just audiotape of all the biggest rejections in our lives and will cry when we hear it. One big set up to humiliate us.  Or maybe it's pretty good. We have no way of knowing. The cover art was well done, though.

The Mallard (SF), OBN III's (Austin), and Outer Minds (Chicago) played excellent sets. It's really sunny down here, so it's exciting to see everyone cook in the sun. After the show ended, it looked like a pink race of zombies stumbling out of the woods and into the neighborhood. Why aren't there more murders committed by Austin residents? Excellent self control, that's why. At the beginning of March, I'm guessing they have a town hall situation, sort of a Q and A, where they reckon it's within the towns best interest to tough out these couple weeks. But who knows how politics work?

Radio K at SXSW 2013 update: Squares

Posted on 3/12/2013

We rolled into the unsuspecting city around 630 am Monday. After watching the warm Texas Sunrise from our rented condo we retired for a few hours rest after our lengthy travel.

The afternoon led us to the main drag of showcase row. We indulged in exotic food and got our bearings amongst the other early-arrivals. We took in a freak show at the Lucky Lizard and saw a sword swallower gag as he slipped two 20-inch blades down his throat.

As daylight descended, the streets swelled with hundreds of people. Madness everywhere. We did our best to contribute to the wild atmosphere..

Carry your phone charger on you at all times. It could just save you from sleeping under a tree when you wander off and get lost.

Now that it is 3pm, we are almost ready to roll back out into sunny streets.

Day 2 will surely be lived by lessons learned.

Squares OUT.

Our first show at SXSW was on the Monday before the music festival officially started.  It was on a boat on Ladybird Lake with Outer Minds, Milk Music, and Fat Tony. The upper deck was packed. During our set the boat pulled by this little kid and his dad in a canoe. The kid went nuts to the songs. He stood up and rocked out while his dad paddled like it was Deliverance so his boy wouldn't miss a song.  It made me stop and think... in a few decades, that boy will put that man in a nursing home.  Good times.

BNLX decided to take the long route to SXSW this year.  We made a quick stop in Nashville and Memphis to visit some good friends and stop by a few recording studios.

ED__JODY_EDIT.jpg
Ed with his pal Jody Stephens, who was the drummer for legendary power pop pioneers Big Star and Minneapolis-based super group Golden Smog, hanging out at Ardent Studios.  Ardent is one of the great American rock and roll studios located in Memphis, who has hosted everyone from Big Star, Led Zeppelin and R.E.M. to the Replacements, Raconteurs and The White Stripes.

ASHLEY_AT_SUN_STUDIO_BW.jpg
BNLX visited Sun Studio in Memphis, the literal birth place of rock and roll recording, where the earliest hits by Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and many others were recorded.  Here's a shot of Ashley Ackerson singing into the actual Shure model 55 microphone used by Elvis in 1956!

Wiggy Ackerson, tour manager for BNLX, gives Big Star's Jody Stephens a BNLX LP.

Cheers!
