Rock Me, Amadeus

Sunday 6:30 - 8 a.m.
Host name(s):
Erik
Genre of Music:
Classical Music (choral, orchestral, chamber)
Why is this music important in today's scene?
Musical forms and techniques in all genres of modern music trace their roots to classical music. Whether you like the Beatles' use of looping background sounds on their Sgt. Pepper's album (pioneered by Karlheinz Stockhausen), the atmospheric sounds of bands like Godspeed You! Black Emperor (pioneered by modernists like Steve Reich), or the lamenting bass lines of Bob Dylan and Led Zeppelin (made famous by Claudio Monteverdi and Henry Purcell), it is hard to deny the influence that even the oldest classical music has on the music that we listen to today.
Where did this music come from?
Originating as chant in medieval times, classical music developed into the madrigals of the renaissance, the operas of the Baroque period, and symphonies of the Classical period, the light folk dances and brooding masterworks of the Romantic period, and the dissonant yet intriguing pieces of the Modern, Post-Modern, and Contemporary periods.
Why are you doing this show?
I am doing this show in order to educate the loyal K listership on the merits of the "classics", to challenge their critical listening with modern works, and to present classical music in a fun and interesting way. Classical music is a passion of mine, and I want to share that with all of our listeners.
Who's your favorite artist or song?
I'm going to interpret this question in two different ways. My favorite composers would have to be, in rough chronological order: Palestrina, Gesualdo, Scarlatti (either of 'em), Bach, Hassler, Mozart, Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Dvorak, Stravinsky, Copland...and on, and on. In terms of my favorite artists, there are a few that I always look for when acquiring new recordings. They are as follows: Chanticleer, Cantus, King's Singers, Hilliard Ensemble, Rose Ensemble, Anonymous 4, Academy of Ancient Music (Christopher Hogwood), Berlin Philharmonic (von Karajan, or whomever), London Symphony Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic, just to name a few.
Rock Me, Amadeus and other ground-breaking specialty shows are made possible by members like you.
