     “SOLDIER’S HEART”

A Veteran Benefit Concert & Performance

James Ballentine “Uptown” VFW – Post 246

Sunday November 12th

6:00-11:30 p.m.

The Department of Veteran Affairs has reported that roughly 20 veterans a day commit suicide nationwide.  The current term for those suffering from the effects of war is PTSD.  In World War II and Vietnam, it was referred to as Shellshock.  And prior to that, back in the Civil War the term “Soldier’s Heart” was first coined to refer to negative effects seen in soldiers returning home.  This multi-band rock concert combined with Burlesque performances aims to raise awareness to this epidemic and raise funds for two organizations that work tirelessly to assist veterans in transitioning back into society – aiming to reduce the number of our many heroes resorting to suicide.  The event itself will serve as a great “Vet-together,” and is guaranteed to be a quality evening of energetic entertainment, at a veteran-friendly venue, and at a time when national military pride is heightened – Veterans Day Weekend!

Performance Highlights:

Hosted by local Burlesque luminary Michelle Lutz AKA “Bomb-shell La Belle”. Michelle has curated a cast of top-notch local and regional Burlesque acts to perform numbers in between band sets.  Michelle organizes performances monthly at the Uptown VFW to great reception.  Burlesque performers include:

Bombshell La Belle

Holliedazzle

Sassy von Straddler,

And the "Cyclone of Burlesque," Red Bone!

Voted #19 in 2016 ‘s 21st Century Burlesque Magazine Top 50 Burlesque Performers in the World

All four performers are Burlesque luminaries from the Twin Cities!!!

Rock bands performing include:

HESCO JERKS – This civilian version of the Army rock cover band provides music throughout the spectrum of military operations to instill in our Soldiers the will to fight and win, foster the support of our citizens, and promote our national interests at home and abroad.  They are a seven-member group all of which are National Guardsmen in the Army.

OKTOPOUS – Featuring Army Sergeant Ava Penner -  The OKTOPOUS is a local Minneapolis rock band new to the scene.  Special recognition goes to band member Ava Penner who has been a national guardsman since she enlisted in 2011 at the age of 17.  Ava performs regularly for multiple Army bands.  She recently sang the National Anthem at a Twins Game and has done so for numerous other stadium events.  She will do double duty at the Soldier’s Heart event, as she is also a member of the Hesco Jerks opening the show.

THE MODERN ERAThe Modern Era is a four-piece rock group formed in 2013 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The band is fronted by Jack Swagger, a charming twenty-something little brat that even Steven Tyler would say has too much energy. The band's scrappy debut album, “Too Loud? Too Bad!” is a 16-track marathon of a record that showcases a band in the most early and raw part of their career.

VARIOUS BLONDE – This three-piece rock outfit hails from Kansas City Missouri and are making big waves there and beyond.  They are returning to Minneapolis for the second time to perform at the SOLDIER’S HEART.  An exciting group that’s sure to wildly entertain those in attendance.

The Beneficiary Organizations:

IAVA – The Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans Association – “Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America… remain the most important organization representing the new generation of veterans.” – TIME Magazine.  [This is the national beneficiary for the event, with the one listed right below to serve as the local Minneapolis based organization.]

23rd Veteran – “Combat stress is supposed to happen, it’s a useful survival mechanism. We just need to remove it when we choose to live a civilian life.”  23rd Veteran provides a long-term transition process for Veterans leaving the military, and those who were never properly transitioned.  They focus on our Military Veterans right here in Minnesota!

About the Presenting Event Sponsor:

Cavé Vin Restaurant – This petite French restaurant, located at 5555 Xerxes Avenue, is providing extraordinary support, in the form of a three-day dining fundraiser prior to the Soldier’s Heart event.  The owner of this 14-year-old restaurant Ken Wills, is notorious for his selfless fundraising efforts for numerous organizations each year.  On fundraising evenings, guests can simply order certain highlighted menu items, and Ken will donate the full price of these items to the cause.  The three-day fundraiser, held on Nov 7th, 8th, and 9th, is expected to garner enough funds to cover ALL event production expenses!  This means that all cover charges, silent auction monies, and any other funds raised will go directly to the Charites.  Typically, large corporations are required for a ‘presenting’ sponsor level.  But not here!  Go Cavé Vin!

Other Sponsors:

Beer sponsor – Fulton

Liquor sponsor – Jameson

Radio sponsor – 93X

The Wine Company – silent auction

Updown Arcade – silent auction

And the VFW itself…
