Fresh Jams #1Jul 15, 2014
In this new feature, some of Radio K's employees and volunteers share what they've been hardcore jamming to lately!
SPACE PROM - False Teeth
I'm super into "Space Prom" by False Teeth, it's a new single off their album Grapefruit and it sounds just like a prom song that would be held in space, but the narration seems as if the protagonist wishes to leave the world and go into the unknown because the known is no longer fulfilling. The melody replays in my head when I am brushing my teeth and when I go to the train, among other times. The lyrics are very similar to the matter-of-fact way that one would write in a personal journal, without attempt at grand poetics.
THE BOMBAY ROYALE - Tere Bina
I've been jammin to "Tere Bina" by The Bombay Royale all week. It's not uncommon for western pop music to take elements of Indian music, either through melodies, instrumentation, or textures, but it's more rare to find music so wholly reverent of Indian music as pop culture. This track masterfully combines the album's obvious Bollywood and traditional Indian musical roots with surf rock and western pop styles in a way that sounds purposefully and effectively retro, but not dated or stale.
THE RURAL ALBERTA ADVANTAGE - Terrified
When I heard that there was a new RAA track out, I'll admit, I just about attempted a standing backflip (I have zero ability to do such feats, so it's good that I didn't). When I caught them at a show earlier this year (my third time seeing these wonderful folks live), they'd played more than a few brand spankin' new tracks, promising that very soon, we'd get to see them in a finished form. And now, that promise is fulfilled, with the added bonus of a release date for their third and latest album, Mended With Gold, due this fall. "Terrified" has everything I've come to love about the Rural Alberta Advantage: unforgivingly driving percussion, beautiful vocals, and lyrics that mix desperation with hope. I wasn't even halfway through my first play before I'd pre-ordered the album, and I absolutely can't wait to hear the rest of it!
ROBERT PLANT - Rainbow
The almighty Robert Plant offers up a new, very celebratory song for the summer of 2014. A preview of his new record lullaby and... The Ceaseless Roar which is due out early September, "Rainbow" features Plant's effervescent vocals soaring above some heavy hitting tribal drums and clean guitar strumming that persists the majority of the song. For someone who has been relevant in music for so many years, it is no surprise that this song kills it. It is a great pleasure to hear something so new and refreshing from a familiar voice.
