With the widespread adaptation of digital cameras, just about anyone can become an amateur filmmaker today. But while digital files have become the predominate means of storing film footage, newer generations can still learn a lot from the tools pioneered by the first filmmakers. Producer Parker Lemke visited the University of Minnesota campus to learn what the analogue method of making movies can offer students of the digital age.

The word ‘icon’ has a lot of weighty connotations. Of originality, of an inspiration, of someone who trail blazed a genre. Music and film is full of them, but they wouldn’t be the same if it weren’t for the clothes on their backs. I dropped by the studio of a rising Minneapolis fashion designer and her part in the latest Twin Cities event to define what it is to be an icon, creatively departing from the quintessential fashion show format.

Usually films speed up time in their fictional universes to tell a story that spans days, weeks, or years in roughly 90 minutes. Richard Linklater’s modern masterpiece “Boyhood” has sparked conversations about time In film. As the story unfolds, the viewer watches the actors age over a period of 12 years on screen as they did in real life. Artist Christian Marclay has also uniquely explored the concept of time to create his 24-hour piece called “The Clock”, which is currently screening at the Walker Art Center. Producer Katie Bolin sat down with The Walker’s film curator Sheryl Mosley to discuss “The Clock”.
