1/29/14 - NEWISH MUSIC PARTYJan 31, 2014
In which our slowpoke host fell in love with all the brilliant music that came out last year.
Another week, another show. Wow, we made it to two, didn’t we? Anyways, tonight’s show was pretty awesome if you ask me. It leaned a little more modern than what I’ll usually play (normally I’d have more than just Iron Maiden and Bathory to fall under the “classics” category), but having just spent way too much money to catch up on the albums I missed last year, I figured it would be great to play, well, the albums I missed last year. New music from The Ocean collective, Revocation. Gorguts, and TesseracT; they all got spun this show and boy did I ever jam out to those. I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did.
I also got to play a few requests, which was awesome. As I mentioned the first week, any requests for songs/bands I don’t have in the library go on a list, and I’ll try to get them on the show if I feel like they’ll make good additions to the set. I’m incredibly open minded about music and I like people to hear stuff they like, so most requests will probably go through. But I still do run the show, so no promises. For example, if you request a song, I’ll probably play it. If you request it again the next week, I probably won’t. THE MORE YOU KNOW.
Anyways, as far as requests that I got this last week and showed up on the show, I played some Bathory (In Conspiracy With Satan is all I had; I’m trying to get more!), and some Skindred, which are an awesome reggae-nu-metal band from Wales. They’ve got a unique sound, crazy genre crossovers, and they can go hard when they want to. In the future I’ll go in-depth on why people shouldn’t hate Nu Metal like they do, but for now I’ll just leave you with Skindred as a prime example. The last band that got requested was Cave In. They’ve been around for almost two decades, which made me surprised that I had never heard of them. But looking them up, I’m definitely going to jam them more. They’ve got a crazy cool vibe. So thanks, requester!
Last up, we’ve got the TRACK OF THE WEEK. Unlike the fun, melodic, pop-metal of Ozzy that marked last week’s TOTW, tonight I’m going totally the opposite.
INDIAN – DIRECTIONAL
“Directional” is one of the six tracks off of noise/doom/sludge band Indian’s JUST RELEASED (like seriously just this week) album “From All Purity.” And holy hell. Like, what? This track is one of the darkest, dankest, dingiest, dirtiest, and most destructive tracks I’ve ever heard. The key word in the dialogue about this track and album has been “challenging,” in that “even the most ardent death metal fans find this “challenging” to get through.” I won’t keep on for much longer, because I plan on writing up a full review of this truly unique and spectacular album, but I’ll leave you with this: If you don’t want your friends to get into metal, show them this track.
OH YEAH I also gave away the last two pairs of tickets to see Amon Amarth, Enslaved, and Skeletonwitch on February 8th. It’ll be rad.
