William's Health Began To Decline (11/10/2013)

Hate to say it, folks...but the show this week was FLAME! There were LOUD songs, there were SOFT songs, there were FAST songs, and that was all. We heard a song from Martin Denny called "Simba" that may or may not have been racist (hint: it is racist but no more racist than any piece of "exotica" music). We heard “Torah Service- Adoration,” a neat piece composed in 1965 by a 17 year old Jewish boy named Jonathan Klein. He composed a jazz version of the Friday night Kabalat Shabbat ceremony, toured it around the east coast with Rabbi David Davis, and debuted it in New York with the help of Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, Thad Jones, and more heavy jazz cats. What ever happened to Jonathan Klein, you ask? Who knows...who knows.....We also heard a beautiful piece of non-jazz music in there at the end by Mdou Moctar, a Tuareg guitarist from Agadez, Niger. Moctar had to learn guitar in secret because his family did not allow music in the house. Anyway, there might be an in-studio next week from saxophonist George Cartwright (who has played with Zorn and Ornette), Paul Metzger (local avant guitar/banjo legend), Andrew Broder (of Fog and Cloak Ox fame) on turntables, and Timothy Glenn (drummer I am not too familiar with but I had parantheses for the other guys so I didn't want him to feel bad if for some reason he were to read this which he probably wouldn't but I'm just playin it safe). I caught a set those guys did at the Soap Factory a couple months ago and it was way way cool. Tune in!
