Today’s track of the day comes from local band PRGRPHS and from their new album You’re Ridiculous (I Love You). The track begins with a reserved intro that reminds me of toys marching. Midway through the song, the band transitions into a more energetic mood with some lively guitars and rhythm. PRGRPHS melds these two different moods to create an incredibly immersive song.
The Canadian garage-rock duo shows its chops on “Animal”, from their latest album Do Not Engage. Singer/guitarist Becky Black gives the song some sleaze lyrics and scuzzy riffs, while drummer Maya Miller provides a thumping, meaty rhythm to accompany Black. Together, they create a song that perfectly evokes a night out. The track is definitely recommended to fans of the Kills or the Black Keys.
The Minneapolis-based band delivers an arresting noise-pop tune from their latest EP. Vocalist Sarah Rose’s lyrics become part of the song’s mist, but her call to “take me away” is all the emotional pull we need. With their hazy guitars and melodies, Is/Is effectively recreates a warm summer afternoon, something with which to get away from this cold winter.
The Austin-based band’s latest track was written for a friend who fell in love with a girl who wanted to leave her boyfriend for him, but neither shared their feelings outright. It takes restraint to successfully portray unrequited love, and the Black and White Years nails it. The male/female duet adds a heartbreaking element to the lyrics, while the instrumentation recalls the Human League and OMD. The result: a song that is intimate yet wistful.
Swedish musician Linnea Olsson brings a beautiful twist to the music she writes. Although the songs themselves would be excellent with any instrumentation, it's her skill with the cello that truly elevates "Dinosaur" to the next level. Check it out below!
