Born and raised in Minneapolis MN, Andrew Broder has dedicated the better part of his thirty-plus years to carving out his own singular path in music. Andrew has spent time as a cutting and scratching battle DJ, a snotty punk rocker, a challenging and thoughtful improviser, soundtrack composer, working sideman, producer, remixer, beat-maker, poet, beauty creator, brutal noise-monger and above all a fearless, restless and provocative songwriter.
The Cloak Ox is made of four staunch music-making Midwestern men. They are Andrew Broder, Jeremy Ylvisaker, Mark Erickson and Martin Dosh and their names may be familiar. Of course, they may not be. They hail from Minneapolis, MN, and have been friends for many years, playing a lot—a lot—of music together and apart. They have started bands, quit bands, restarted bands, played in others' bands, inspired other people's bands that became very successful, and even sometimes joined those bands after the fact. Suffice it to say, they have played damn near every kind of music there is to play.
Lest you mistake Serengeti for a joke artist, heed the truth that the prolific Chicagoan has written some of the most thoughtful and intricately crafted rhymes in recent memory. From self-deprecating and sorrowful looks at addiction and image transformation to the mind-bending art-is-realer-than-life adventures of Kenny Dennis he's anything but trite or superficial. He’s also collaborated with celebrated underground artists like Sufjan Stevens, Son Lux, Matthewdavid, and Yoni Wolf of Why?
