Elle PF
Orchestral rock and electronic production come to a head, birthing the cinematic sound of Minneapolis-based band Elle PF. Led by songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, & producer Ranelle LaBiche, Elle PF originates music that is both musically lush and lyrically dense, drawing influence from artists such as Bjork, St. Vincent, Owen Pallett, and God Speed! Black Emperor. Band members Jenessa LaSota (bass/harmonies), John Acarregui (drums), and Tyler Phelps (guitar), join LaBiche to forge a soundscape inhabiting haunting vocal harmonies that flow over symphonic-like movements. Think classical training funneled through a divided electro / rock sensibility.

Recorded and produced by LaBiche herself, She Wrote It will be the band's debut album; 12 tracks confronting the issues of social frustration, rage, loss, and melancholy. LaBiche’s musical style of writing wallows in the careful little details, inviting the listener on a linear journey using wide-stretched dynamics and influence to convey content ranging from political commentary to existential apathy. She Wrote It may be the soundtrack to living in a reality that one can barely face while engulfed in social absurdity.

City Counselor
City Counselor is a Minneapolis-based electronic pop band making music about the sorry state of the world. Initially the solo project of composer and community organizer Nicky Steves (Lunch Duchess, BOYF), the group now includes Amy Hager (Fort Wilson Riot, Pornonono) on keys and vocals, Antoine Martinneau (Moors Blackmon, 2018 Cedar Commissions recipient) on bass guitar, and Jared Hemming (The Florists) on drums. Incisive, catchy, and surprisingly uplifting, their music captures the emotional toll of a society in free fall while reminding us why we dare to care about it at all. City Counselor received The Cedar Cultural Center’s highly-competitive 2017 Cedar Commission, composing for and performing with an 8-piece orchestra and 5-piece choir. They have since performed at the Walker Art Center, the newly reopened Parkway Theatre, 7th Street Entry, and more. They released their debut EP, Public Record, in January 2017.

The Work that Tools Do is City Counselor’s sophomore EP, a collection that speaks to the moral ambivalence of the structures and practices of our society, and the damage that results from that lack of accountability: unending gun massacres, those terrible “luxury” apartment buildings, and more. The songs build on the group’s repertoire of avant-pop -- melodies that feel natural in your ear without feeling obvious or tired. Drawing on orchestral, funk, and dance-pop traditions, The Work that Tools Do is filled with satisfying swells and soaring vocals. Think Kate Bush if she ran for office with Stereolab and Anohni managing her campaign.
