It was a night of local favorites at the Triple Rock on November 23rd, 2013 as Gloss, France Camp, Prissy Clerks, and Holographic Sands all took to the stage.
It was a night of local favorites at the Triple Rock on November 23rd, 2013 as the Forged Artifacts showcase was held in honor of the release of Gloss’s new EP, Between Themselves. France Camp, Prissy Clerks, and Holographic Sands, bands also on the label, supported Gloss in their EP debut. Much of the vinyl was available at the merchandise table, which was attended to by none other than Matt Linden, the owner of Forged Artifacts himself.
Four-piece, Holographic Sands, started the night out strong with some of their older material, as well as songs from their new EP, Water Bodies. The earliest set did not prevent the room to be full of people. Lead vocalist and guitarist, Jared Carrigan, even mentioned how surprised, yet grateful he was for the support. Their set of eclectic sounds did not fail to keep the attention of the audience. They began the set with “All Day Dream,” off of the new EP, was a more classic indie rock song with strong vocals and a heartfelt guitar solo. Other songs included, “Master Echo,” a folksy piece with story-telling lyrics. Songs that were more blues-y, and even a bit psychedelic rock inspired contrasted from one another, showing the band’s versatility with sound and genre.
Next up was Prissy Clerks, a five-piece outfit with a garage-pop sound. Lead vocalist and guitarist, Clara Salyer, sang with a beautifully airy, yet crisp voice, which complimented and contrasted against the distorted guitars and heavy drumming. The sound was very ninties-inspired, similar to Liz Phair if Liz Phair’s voice was higher. At first look, the band has a total Minnesota aesthetic: Keyboardist, Emily Lazear, wore overalls and Bassist, Howard Hamilton III, wore a flannel and beanie. However, the group proved to be very spunky.
France Camp was energetic, as always, as the audience became quite participatory in their set. They played songs from their newest self-titled album available on tape, yes, that seemingly obsolete medium from the nineties. Their songs ranged from surf-punk to bluesy rock, all of which they played the absolute heck out of. Jay (France Camp) attempted a stage dive, which he managed to ride out on the second try. They played a new track, in which drummer, Dylan, unwillingly succumbed to, that ended up being a triumphantly fast-paced hit. The crowd moshed their hearts out, and even Jared of Holographic Sands got a chance to surf the punker swell. They also did not hesitate to thank Matt Linden for putting the showcase together.
Finally, the band of the night, Gloss, took the stage to debut songs from their new EP. Their waving dream-pop melodies set a calmer mood to end the night. The sound was reminiscent of the eighties, where dream-pop’s origins lie. They sounded like a modern take on The Cure, if The Cure were on the dream-pop heavy Brooklyn label, Captured Tracks. Bassist, Jack Woolsey, and, drummer, Jordan Bleau, also comprise two thirds of Frankie Teardrop, for those of you who may not already know. Bleau’s drumming was exceptionally meticulous and controlled while the guitar and bass parts seemed to roll through. After the crowd begged for an encore, the group returned with a whimsical cover of “Fly Away” by Lenny Kravitz.
It was a night of success at the Triple Rock. Even more so, it was a night of community. It seemed as though everyone and every band was there in support of each other and Forged Artifacts, itself. It is truly refreshing to witness this kind of support; it is something that may only be possible in Minnesota. Forged Artifacts has come a long way since its beginnings, and surely has a bright future ahead.
