Soundset 2019May 29, 2019
Another memorial day weekend gone by, another successful Soundset Festival from the Rhymesayers team! Minnesota showed out yet again with stellar performances from local acts like Dua Saleh, Student1, and the whole Rhymesayers gang. The stars were out in force as well, with names like Tierra Whack, Doja Cat, Run the Jewels, and SZA playing to huge crowds of Minnesotans gathered at the State Fairgrounds. Despite a last second cancellation from Lil Uzi Vert, the crowd stayed positive and rocked out with viral sensation Lil Nas X and upcoming rapper DaBaby in his stead.
The day featured much more than just music- Over by the cattle barn, local auto shops put on a car show featuring professional mechanics and at-home weekend warriors alike. The street art collective Ironlak and their team of graffiti artists worked on murals all day, and local skate shop Famillia hosted an open skate at a makeshift park along with the clothing brand Volcom.
Messages of positivity and proactivity echoed throughout the fairgrounds from both the artists on stage and the festival goers alike. At the close of a long day, local rapper Slug and friends saluted the Twin Cities and the people in them, encouraging everyone to dance away the night with Lil Wayne at the Minneapolis Stage and the DJs at First Avenue downtown later that night.
Soundset festival is a wonderful testament to the artists in the cities and the work that Rhymesayers does every year. We can’t wait to see this festival move forward and continue to link our beloved local musicians with a larger community of music listeners and promoters.
