Jan 03, 2014An in-studio with Brilliant Beast, the NUMBER ONE, LOCAL album on Radio K's Top 77 Countdown, and our favorite releases from 2013.
This Week's In-Studio: Brilliant Beast
As we've officially closed off the year 2013 and we're looking back on the year in local music, it seemed only fitting to have Brilliant Beast in-studio, a band who released an album back in November on Guilt Ridden Pop, but never made it into the K until now. One of the many great releases of 2013, Brilliant Beast's more or less debut EP Where Do You Want is a modern take on the 90s shoegaze sound, a little heavier but still fluid and melting, as if you were listening to a garage rock band underwater. The band initially began a few years ago with an indie-folk sound under the name The Brilliant Beast. Since dropping the article, they've also dropped the folk notions. The EP is certianly a solid entrance into this new sound for the band, and moving forward this new step will undoubtedly prove a wise decision. They'll be playing shows every Wednesday at Cause for the rest of January, and with each week they'll have different friends joining in and different themes for each night. So if you like what you heard during the in-studio, you know where to go every Wednesday for the rest of the month.

NOW as you may know, during today's episode Emily and I recapped some of our favorite local releases of 2013, but naturally we couldn't fit everything into one hour of Off the Record....
SOOOOOOOOOOO
Stay tuned for TWO MORE BLOG POSTS (WOW) where Emily and I will each make a list (probably in no particular order--at least that's how mine will be) of each of our local favorites from 2013. It'll be super special. But until then, try and guess whose pick was whose from the setlist above. I DARE YOU.
But, I have to say that 2013 was genuinely a great year for local music. There was a lot of stuff from bran spankin' new bands as well as some old(ish) favorites. It wasn't all that surprising that Poliça's latest album Shulamith was the number one album on Radio K's Top 77 album as voted by our listeners. It's testament to how vibrant and successful our local music scene is becoming. This past year truly made me proud to be one of the new co-hosts of Off the Record, and a member of this great community of musicians we have here in the Twin Cities. 2013 has made me even more excited and anxious for what 2014 will bring in local music.
SPEAKING OF WHICH...
Next week Buffalo Moon will be joining us in-studio in support of their new album, Machista, which is to be released on January 11th of this new year 2014! We've been playing the single and title-track "Machista" a lot on Off the Record, and they'll be dropping the video for it TOMORROW.
