KiCk i by Arca
Following Arca’s 2017 self titled album, which was incredibly successful, fans have been eagerly awaiting KiCk i. The Venezuelan record producer Alejandro Ghersi, better known by her stage name Arca, delivers a broad spectrum of sounds and experiences on this album. At times KiCk i delivers aggressive thumping bass notes, such as on the opening track “Nonbinary,” and at others delicate shimmering vocals, like those of the single “Time.” Ghersi willfully defies labels and barriers, incorporating multiple languages, genres and attitudes (ranging from gentle to confrontational) throughout the album, making it particularly hard to pin down. But, what cohesively comes out on the album, is a type of catharsis only possible in the most dystopian of societies.
