K Á R Y Y N
As anyone who has heard the six singles K Á R Y Y N released in anticipation of her debut knows, there's no possible way THE QUANTA SERIES would be anything less than gorgeous. That's why it's so damn pleasing to find that the Alabama-born experimentalist continuing to brilliantly bend her style of operatic experimental pop music across he entirety of this 11-track LP.
As previously released material like the cascading "Binary" and the haunted acapella "Un-c2-See" work off of her masterfully moody voice, K Á R Y Y N is able to get even more stripped-down and expressively natural on new compositions, including the pensive "Ambets Gorav" and the amorphous, melody-soaked "Mirror Me."
Although K Á R Y Y N has an exceptional range, she never seems to exploit her voice, instead stretching it out, snipping it up and augmenting it as if it were just another ambient, amorphous element. With THE QUANTA SERIES, Káryyn has released a collection of songs that come off gorgeous. But that's not what K Á R Y Y N was shooting for, as she crafted something challenging, mysterious and memorable. Gorgeous was simply a by-product.
