New Additions to Radio K - Albums
Ear - Rumspringa
Electronica duo from New York. Fragile acoustic elements with digital distortion. The press tid-bit called them ‘lo-fi laptop twee’ and I am in loove with that description.
Fav tracks: Coil, or Nothing's Open for a hazy acoustic pick
Classic Electronic duo from Scotland, they’ve been active since the late 80’s. This record has a gorgeous dark atmosphere and perfectly eerie glitchy vocal samples. Reminds me a bit of The Avalanches but evil.
RIYL: Autechre, Oneohtrix Point Never, Aphex Twin
Fav tracks: Prophecy At 1420 MHz, Father And Son.
Crash of Rhinos - Logbook
Emo from the UK. This record is the band’s first new music in 13 years, also the first follow-up to their 2013 cult-classic Knots.
RIYL: Algernon Cadwallader, Hot Water Music, Touche amore
Fav tracks: Figures of Light, Errata
RIYL: Denzel Curry, By Storm, Earl Sweatshirt
Slippers - Slippers 08
Super cute twee-pop from LA. This is out on my favorite indie label K-records. These songs are all super short and sweet, one track is literally 35 seconds long but believe me it's still a good one. Contrary to the name of the record this is not their 8th album, it's their second.
RIYL: The Apples in Stereo, Touch Girl Apple Blossom, Guided by Voices
RIYL: Mazzy Star, Hovvdy, Yo La Tengo, Carol King
This artist first made a name for themselves as a saxophonist on NYC's avant-Jazz scene. This album is their first as a singer-songwriter, learning into their Tennessee roots. It's also their debut on Matador.
RIYL: Big Thief, Waxahatchee, Wednesday
Bedroom dream-pop from Chicago. This album is lo-fi and dronning in a way that reminds me of some of my 90's slowcore favs, while also being quite bright and catchy. It's out on Spirit Goth, the record label run by Castlebeat's Josh Hwang.
Fav tracks: entire album is strong trust
New York noise rock. This album packs 10 songs into 11 minutes, making each song a short sketch of chaos. RIYL:
Fav track: Ghost of Love
This is Ngonda's sophomore album of retro-inspired soul + RnB. Out on Daptone records. Juliette gives 5 stars
RIYL: Thee Sacred Souls, Marvin Gaye, The Olympians
Indie-folk with some eclectic glitchy bits and a lush sonic palette. Filled with medieval and renaissance imagery.
RIYL: Alex G, Greg Mendez
Fav tracks: Venetian Glass, Better Things
Slowcore from Huntsville Alabama, this is the band's third album. Filled with delightfully syrupy slide guitar and twang. This has been out for a month-ish now but I just kept coming back to it < 3
RIYL: Codeine, Acetone, Eric's Trip
Fav tracks: Leaves to The Sun
Originally recorded in 1970 and then lost to time, this is an archival release from Mexican Summer/Anthology recordings. lovely shimmery outlaw country.
RIYL: Tim Buckley, TVZ, Nick Drake
Fav track: Absolute Zero, Take My Hand
Twin Peaks have been floating around the Chicago DIY world since 2010. After taking a break in the early 2020's they've recently gotten back to touring, and this month they are celebrating 10 years of their album Down In Heaven. The three songs in rotation are the new bonus tracks not on the orignal. (This is fr one of my favorite albums, I am so happy for the excuse to put it in rotation)
RIYL: Wilco, Kurt Vile, Dr. Dog
Fav track: Back Door
